What’s more, the most beloved pop artists are not always the safest karaoke go-tos: Our list has plenty of one-hit wonders and other top 40 curiosities, but no songs by such obvious icons as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Guns N’ Roses or Rihanna. So what makes a great karaoke song? Well, there’s definitely no one-size-fits-all answer to that question - a classic sing-along for some is a compulsory bathroom break for others, and a great performer can make a controversial choice seem inspired as easily as a lackluster performer can flop with a can’t-miss pick.

With karaoke now finally back in full effect - and please, continue to practice safe singing, everyone - Billboard wanted to celebrate the art form that’s given us countless instances of incomparable joy and similarly peerless hangovers over the years. Throw in a cheaply made non-sequitur music video, a pitcher of domestic beer and a tambourine, and any random Thursday night downtown could turn into the most transcendent musical experience of your entire year. Whether at a solo mic on stage in a strange and sparsely populated bar or packed in a room with a dozen of our closest and most animated friends, karaoke allowed us pop music lovers the opportunity to not just celebrate those tunes but to crawl inside them, to become an essential part of them. Concerts were how we connected best with our favorite artists, but karaoke is how we really bonded with our favorite songs.

Jessie J's 'Price Tag' finished up at number five at the end of the year, with the results being collected from three million songs sung by over 100,000 users. The X Factor finalists' version of David Bowie's 'Heroes' is at number three, while One Direction's debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful' trails at four. Lucky Voice managing director Nick Thistleton said: "Adele has got one of the greatest voices in contemporary pop so it's no surprise our customers want to test themselves against the best and pick her songs in such overwhelming numbers." The star's cover version of 'Make You Feel My Love' came in second place with 10%, while 'Rolling In The Deep' polled at number seven. The singer's 2011 international hit 'Someone Like You' was the most popular karaoke hit last year after it made up 14% of the total amount of songs performed on website Lucky Voice. Adele's songs are the most popular choice for karaoke, research has found.
